The Gospel According to John. The 7th Chapter
Ver.
Wycliffe (1382/95)
Tyndale (1526)
Geneva (1560)
King James (1611)
7:1 After these things Jesus walked into Galilee, for he would not walk into Judaea, for the Jews sought to slay him. After that Jesus went about in Galile, and would not go about in jewry, for the jews sought to kill him. After these things, Jesus walked in Galile, and would not walk in Judea: for the Jews sought to kill him. After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
7:2 And there was nigh a feast day of the Jews, a feast of Tabernacles. The jews’ tabernacle feast was at hand. Now the Jews’ feast of the Tabernacles was at hand. Now the Jews’ feast of Tabernacles was at hand.
7:3 And his brethren said to him, Pass hence, and go into Judaea, that also thy disciples see thy works that thou doest; His brethren therefore said unto him: Get thyself hence and go into jewry that thy disciples may see thy works that thou doest. His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples may see thy works that thou doest. His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy Disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
7:4 forsooth no man doeth any thing in hid place, and he seeketh to be in open. If thou doest these things, shew thyself to the world. There is no man that doeth any thing secretly, and he himself seeketh to be known. If thou do such things, shew thyself to the world. For there is no man that doeth any thing secretly, & he himself seeketh to be famous. If thou doest these things, shew thyself to the world. For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly: If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.
7:5 For neither his brethren believed in him. For as yet his brethren believed not in him. For as yet his brethren believed not in him. For neither did his brethren believe in him.
7:6 Therefore Jesus saith to them, My time came not yet, but your time is evermore ready. Then Jesus said unto them: My time is not yet come, your time is alway ready. Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.
7:7 The world may not hate you, soothly it hateth me; for I bear witnessing thereof, that the works of it be evil. The world cannot hate you. Me it hateth: Because I testify of it, that the works of it are evil. The world cannot hate you: but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. The world cannot hate you, but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.
7:8 Go ye up to this feast day, but I shall not go up to this feast day, for my time is not yet full-filled. Go ye up unto this feast, I will not go up yet unto this feast, For my time is not yet full come. Go ye up unto this feast: I will not go up yet unto this feast: for my time is not yet fulfilled. Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast, for my time is not yet full come.
7:9 When he had said these things, he dwelt in Galilee. These words he said unto them, and abode still in Galile. These things he said unto them, and abode still in Galile. When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.
7:10 And after that his brethren were gone up, and he went up to the feast day, not openly, but as in private. As soon as his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly: but as it were privily. But as soon as his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were privately. But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
7:11 Therefore the Jews sought him in the feast day, and said, Where is he? Then sought him the jews at the feast, and said: Where is he? Then the Jews sought him at the feast, & said, Where is he? Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
7:12 And much grutching was of him among the people. For some said, That he is good; and others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people; And much murmuring was there of him among the people. Some said He is good. Other said nay, but he deceiveth the people. And much murmuring was there of him among the people. Some said, He is a good man: other said, Nay: but he deceiveth the people. And there was much murmuring among the people, concerning him: For some said, He is a good man: Others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the people.
7:13 nevertheless no man spake openly of him, for dread of the Jews. No man spake openly of him, for fear of the jews. Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews. Howbeit, no man spake openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
7:14 But when the middle feast day came, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. In the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. Now when half the feast was done, Jesus went up into the Temple and taught. Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the Temple, and taught.
7:15 And the Jews wondered, and saying, How knoweth this man letters, since he hath not learned? And the jews marvelled, saying: How knoweth he the scriptures? seeing that he never learned. And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man the Scriptures, seeing that he never learned. And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
7:16 Jesus answered to them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. Jesus answered them, and said: My doctrine is not mine: but his that sent me. Jesus answered them, & said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. Jesus answered them, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of god: or whether I spake of myself. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
7:18 He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, is soothfast, and unrightwiseness is not in him. He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own praise. But whosoever seeketh his praise that sent him, he is true, and no unrightwiseness is in him. He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.
7:19 Whether Moses gave not to you a law, and no man of you keepeth the law? What seek ye to slay me? Did not Moses give you a law? And yet none of you keepeth the law? Why go ye about to kill me? Did not Moses give you a Law, and yet none of you keepeth the Law? Why go ye about to kill me? Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you keepeth the Law? Why go ye about to kill me?
7:20 And the people answered, and said, Thou hast a devil; who seeketh to slay thee? The people answered and said: Thou hast the devil. Who goeth about to kill thee? The people answered, and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee? The people answered, and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?
7:21 Jesus answered, and said to them, I have done one work, and all ye wonder. Jesus answered, and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. Jesus answered, and said to them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel. Jesus answered, and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.
7:22 Therefore Moses gave to you circumcision; not for it is of Moses, but of the fathers; and in the sabbath ye circumcise a man. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision, not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers. And yet ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision, (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise a man. Moses therefore gave unto you Circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers) and ye on the Sabbath day circumcise a man.
7:23 If a man take circumcision in the sabbath, that the law of Moses be not broken, have ye indignation to me, for I made all the man whole in the sabbath? If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision without breaking of the law of Moses: Disdain ye at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? If a man on the Sabbath receive circumcision, that the Law of Moses should not be broken, be ye angry with me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the Sabbath day? If a man on the Sabbath day receive circumcision, that the Law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the Sabbath day?
7:24 Do not ye deem after the face, but deem a rightful doom. Judge not after the utter appearance: but judge rightwise judgement. Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgement. Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgement.
7:25 Therefore some of Jerusalem said, Whether this is not he, whom the Jews seek to slay? Then said some of them of Jerusalem: Is not this he whom they go about to kill? Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they go about to kill? Then said some of them of Hierusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
7:26 and lo! he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him. Whether the princes know verily, that this is Christ? behold he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing to him. Do not our rulers know indeed, that this is very Christ? And behold, he speaketh openly, and they say nothing to him: do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ? But lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him: Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
7:27 But we know this man, of whence he is; but when Christ shall come, no man knoweth of whence he is. But we know this man whence he is, but when Christ cometh, no man shall know whence he is. Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no man shall know whence he is. Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
7:28 Therefore Jesus cried in the temple, teaching, and saying, Ye know me, and ye know of whence I am; and I came not of myself, but he is true that sent me, whom ye know not. Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught saying: And me ye know, and whence I am ye know: and I am not come of myself. But he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. Then cried Jesus in the Temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am: yet am I not come of myself, but he that sent me, is true, whom ye know not. Then cried Jesus in the Temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am, and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me, is true, whom ye know not.
7:29 I know him, and if I say that I know him not, I shall be like to you, a liar; but I know him, for of him I am, and he sent me. I know him: For I am of him, and he hath sent me. But I know him: for I am of him, and he hath sent me. But I know him, for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
7:30 Therefore they sought to take him, and no man set on him hands, for his hour came not yet. Then sought the jews to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his time was not yet come. Then they sought to take him, but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
7:31 And many of the people believed in him, and said, When Christ shall come, whether he shall do more tokens, than those that this doeth? Many of the people believed on him, and said: When Christ cometh: Will he do more miracles than this man hath done? Now many of the people believed in him, and said, When the Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than this man hath done? And many of the people believed on him, & said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
7:32 The Pharisees heard the people grutching of him these things; and the princes and the Pharisees sent ministers, to take him. The pharises heard that the people murmured such things about him: and the pharises and scribes sent ministers forth to take him. The Pharises heard that the people murmured these things of him, and the Pharises, and high Priests sent officers to take him. The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him: And the Pharisees and the chief Priests sent officers to take him.
7:33 Therefore Jesus said to them, Yet a little time I am with you, and I go to the Father, that sent me. Then said Jesus unto them: Yet am I a little while with you, and then go I unto him that sent me. Then said Jesus unto them, Yet am I a little while with you, and then go I unto him that sent me. Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
7:34 Ye shall seek me, and ye shall not find me; and where I am, ye may not come. Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: And where I am, thither can ye not come. Ye shall seek me, & shall not find me, & where I am, can ye not come. Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.
7:35 Therefore the Jews said to themselves, Whither shall this go, for we shall not find him? whether he will go into the scattering of heathen men, and will teach the heathen? Then said the jews between themselves: Whither will he go? that we shall not find him. Will he go among the gentiles, which are scattered all abroad, and teach the gentiles? Then said the Jews amongst themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? Will he go unto them that are dispersed among the Grecians, and teach the Grecians? Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
7:36 What is this word, that he said, Ye shall seek me, and ye shall not find; and where I am, ye may not come? What manner of saying is this that he said: ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: And where I am, thither can ye not come? What saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me? and where I am, can ye not come? What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me? and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
7:37 But in the last day of the great feast, Jesus stood, and cried, and saying, If any man thirsteth, come he to me, and drink. In the last day, that great day of the feast: Jesus stood and cried saying: If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. Now in the last & great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood, and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
7:38 He that believeth in me, as the scripture saith, Floods of quick water shall flow of his womb. Whosoever believeth on me, as saith the scripture, out of his belly shall flow rivers of water of life. He that believeth in me, as saith the Scripture, out of his belly shall flow rivers of water of life. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
7:39 Soothly he said this thing of the Holy Ghost, which men that believed in him should take; for the Spirit was not yet given, for Jesus was not yet glorified. This spake he of the spirit, which they that believed on him should receive. For the holy ghost was not yet there, because that Jesus was not yet glorified. (This spake he of the Spirit which they that believed in him, should receive: for the holy Ghost was not yet given because that Jesus was not yet glorified) (But this spake he of the Spirit which they that believe on him, should receive. For the holy Ghost was not yet given, because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
7:40 Therefore of that company, when they had heard these words of him, they said, This is verily a prophet. Many of the people, when they heard this saying said: This is, no doubt, a prophet. So many of the people, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
7:41 Others said, This is Christ. But some said, Whether Christ cometh from Galilee? Other said: this is Christ. Some said: shall Christ come out of galile? Other said, This is the Christ: and some said, But shall Christ come out of Galile? Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
7:42 Whether the scripture saith not, that of the seed of David, and of the castle of Bethlehem, where David was, Christ cometh? Saith not the scripture that Christ shall come of the seed of David: and out of the town of Bethleem where David was? Saith not the Scripture that the Christ shall come of the seed of David, and out of the town of Beth-lehem, where David was? Hath not the Scripture said, that Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
7:43 And so dissension is made in the company for him. So was there dissension among the people for his sake. So was there dissension among the people for him. So there was a division among the people because of him.
7:44 And some of them would have taken him, but no man set hands on him. And some of them would have taken him: but no man laid hands on him. And some of them would have taken him, but no man laid hands on him. And some of them would have taken him, but no man laid hands on him.
7:45 Therefore the ministers came to the bishops and Pharisees, and they said to them, Why brought ye not him? Then came the ministers to the high priests, and pharises. And they said unto them: why have ye not brought him? Then came the officers to the high Priests & Pharises, & they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? Then came the officers to the chief Priests and Pharises, and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
7:46 The ministers answered, Never man spake so, as this man speaketh. The servants answered: never man spake as this man speaketh. The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
7:47 Therefore the Pharisees answered to them, Whether ye be deceived also? Then answered them the pharises: Are ye also deceived? Then answered them the Pharises, Are ye also deceived? Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
7:48 whether any of the princes or of the Pharisees believed in him? Doth any of the rulers, or of the pharises believe on him? Doth any of the rulers, or of the Pharises believe in him? Have any of the rulers, or of the Pharises believed on him?
7:49 But this people, that knoweth not the law, be cursed. but the common people which know not the law are accursed. But this people, which know not the Law, are cursed. But this people who knoweth not the Law, are cursed.
7:50 Nicodemus saith to them, he that came to him by night, that was one of them, Nicodemus said unto them (He that came to Jesus by night which was one of them) Nicodemus said unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, & was one of them.) Nicodemus saith unto them, (He that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
7:51 Whether our law deemeth a man, no but first it hear of him, and know what he doeth? Doth our law judge any man, before it be heard, and known, what he hath done? Doth our Law judge a man before it hear him, & know what he hath done? Doth our Law judge any man before it hear him, & know what he doeth?
7:52 They answered, and said to him, Whether and thou art a man of Galilee? Seek thou scriptures, and see thou, for a prophet riseth not of Galilee. They answered, and said unto him: Art thou also of Galile? Search and look, for out of Galile ariseth no prophet. They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galile? Search and look: for out of Galile ariseth no Prophet. They answered, and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no Prophet.
7:53 And they turned again, each into his house. And every man went unto his own house. And every man went unto his own house. And every man went unto his own house.
