23:1 Then Jesus spake to the companies, and to his disciples, Then spake Jesus to the people, and to his disciples, Then spake Jesus to the multitude, & to his disciples, Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2 saying, Scribes and Pharises sat on the chair of Moses. saying: The scribes and the pharises sit in moses’ seat, Saying, The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses’ seat. Saying, The Scribes and the Pharises sit in Moses’ seat:
23:3 Therefore keep ye, and do ye all things, whatever they shall say to you. But do not ye do after their works; for they say, and do not. whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do: but after their works do not: for they say, and do not, All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do: but after their works do not: for they say, and do not. All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do, but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
23:4 Soothly they bind grievous charges, and unportable, and put on the shoulders of men; but with their finger they will not move them. Yea and they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders: but they themself will not move them with one finger. For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
23:5 Forsooth they do all their works to be seen of men; for they draw abroad their phylacteries, and magnify their hems. All their works they do, for to be seen of men. They set abroad their phylacteries, and make large borders on their garments, All their works they do for to be seen of men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and make long the fringes of their garments, But all their works they do, for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
23:6 Soothly they love the first sitting places at suppers, and the first chairs in synagogues; and love to sit uppermost at feasts, and to have the chief seats in the synagogues, And love the chief place at feasts, and to have the chief seats in the assemblies, And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the Synagogues,
23:7 and salutations in the market, and to be called of men, masters. and greetings in the markets and to be called of men Rabbi. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8 But do not ye be called master; for one is your master, and all ye be brethren. But ye shall not suffer yourselves to be called rabbi, for one is your master, that is to wit Christ. and all ye are brethren. But be not ye called, Rabbi: for one is your doctor, to wit, Christ, and all ye are brethren. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ, and all ye are brethren.
23:9 And do not ye call to you a father upon earth, for one is your Father, that is in heavens. And call ye no man your father on the earth, for one is your father, and he is in heaven. And call no man your father upon the earth: for there is but one, your Father which is in heaven. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your father which is in heaven.
23:10 Neither be ye called masters, for one is your master, Christ. be ye not called masters, for one is your master, and he is Christ. Be not called doctors: for one is your doctor, even Christ. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
23:11 He that is greatest among you, shall be your minister. He that is greatest among you, shall be your servant. But he that is greatest among you, let him be your servant. But he that is greatest among you, shall be your servant.
23:12 Forsooth he that shall high himself, shall be meeked; and he that shall meek himself, shall be enhanced. But whosoever exalteth himself, shall be brought low. and he that submitteth himself, shall be exalted. For whosoever will exalt himself, shall be brought low: and whosoever will humble himself, shall be exalted. And whosoever shall exalt himself, shall be abased: and he that shall humble himself, shall be exalted.
23:13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, for ye close the realm of heaven before men; for ye enter not, neither ye suffer men entering to enter. Woe be unto you scribes and pharises dissemblers, for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven before men: ye yourselves go not in, neither suffer ye them that come to enter in. Woe therefore be unto you Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, because ye shut up the kingdom of heaven before men: for ye yourselves go not in, neither suffer ye them that would enter, to come in. But woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: For ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering, to go in.
23:14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, that eat the houses of widows, and pray by long prayer; for this thing ye shall take the more doom. Woe be unto you scribes and pharises, for ye devour widows’ houses, and that under a colour of praying long prayers, wherefore ye shall receive greater damnation. Woe be unto you Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye devour widows’ houses, even under a colour of long prayers: wherefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
23:15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, that compass the sea and the land, to make one proselyte; and when he is made, ye make him a son of hell, double more than you. Woe be unto you scribes and pharises hypocrites, for ye compass sea and land, to bring one into your belief: and when ye have brought him ye make him twofold more the child of hell, than ye yourselves are. Woe be unto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and land to make one of your profession: and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell, than you yourselves. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites; for ye compass Sea and land to make one Proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
23:16 Woe to you, blind leaders, that say, Whoever shall swear by the temple of God, it is nought; soothly he that shall swear in the gold of the temple, oweth. Woe be unto you blind guides, for ye say: whosoever swear by the temple, it is nothing: but whosoever swear by the gold of the temple, he is debtor. Woe be unto you blind guides, which say, Whosoever sweareth by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the gold of the Temple, he offendeth. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the Temple, it is nothing: but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the Temple, he is a debtor.
23:17 Ye fools and blind, for what is greater, the gold, or the temple that halloweth the gold? ye fools and blind? whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold. Ye fools and blind, whether is greater, the gold, or the Temple that sanctifieth the gold? Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the Temple that sanctifieth the gold?
23:18 And whoever shall swear in the altar, it is nothing; but he that sweareth in the gift that is on the altar, is debtor. and whosoever sweareth by the altar it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the offering that lieth on the altar is debtor. And whosoever sweareth by the altar, it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the offering that is upon it, offendeth. And whosoever shall swear by the Altar, it is nothing: but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
23:19 Blind men, for what is more, the gift, or the altar that halloweth the gift? ye fools and blind: whether is greater the offering, or the altar which sanctifieth the offering? Ye fools and blind, whether is greater, the offering, or the altar which sanctifieth the offering? Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the Altar that sanctifieth the gift?
23:20 Therefore he that sweareth in the altar, sweareth in it, and in all things that be thereon. whosoever therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all that thereon is. Whosoever therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. Whoso therefore shall swear by the Altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21 And he that sweareth in the temple, sweareth in it, and in him that dwelleth in the temple. And whosoever sweareth by the temple sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. And whosoever sweareth by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. And whoso shall swear by the Temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22 And he that sweareth in heaven, sweareth in the throne of God, and in him that sitteth thereon. And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the seat of god, and by him that sitteth thereon. And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, that tithe mint, anise, and cummin, and have left those things that be of more charge of the law, doom, and mercy, and faith. And these things it behooved to do, and not to leave those. Woe be to you scribes and pharises dissemblers, for ye tithe mint, anise, and cummin, and leave the weightier matters of the law undone: judgement, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to have left the other undone. Woe be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye tithe mint, & anise, & cumin, and leave the weightier matters of the Law, as judgement, and mercy, & fidelity. These ought ye to have done, & not to have left the other. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye pay tithe of mint and anise, and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the Law, judgement, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
23:24 Blind leaders, cleansing a gnat, but swallowing a camel. Ye blind guides, which strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. Ye blind guides, which strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
23:25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, that make clean that thing of the cup and of the platter, that is withoutforth; but within ye be full of raven and uncleanness. Woe be to you scribes and pharises hypocrites, for ye make clean the utter side of the cup, and of the platter: but within they are full of bribery and excess. Woe be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye make clean the utter side of the cup, and of the platter: but within they are full of bribery & excess. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; for ye make clean the outside of the cup, and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
23:26 Thou blind Pharise, cleanse first that thing of the cup and platter which is within, that also that thing that is withoutforth be made clean. Thou blind pharise, cleanse first, that which is within the cup and the platter, that the outside may also be clean. Thou blind Pharise, cleanse first the inside of the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
23:27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, that be like to sepulchres made white, which withoutforth seem fair to men; but within they be full of bones of dead men, and of all filth. Woe be to you scribes, and pharises hypocrites, for ye are like unto painted tombs which appear beautiful outwards: but are within full of dead men’s bones and of all filthiness. Woe be to you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye are like unto whited tombs, which appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all filthiness. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
23:28 So and ye forsooth withoutforth appear rightful to men; but within ye be full of hypocrisy and wickedness. So are ye, for outwards ye appear righteous unto men, when within ye are full of dissimulation and iniquity. So are ye also: for outward ye appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Even so, ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
23:29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharises, hypocrites, that build the sepulchres of prophets, and make fair the burials of just men, Woe be unto you scribes and pharises hypocrites, for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of just men, Woe be unto you, Scribes and Pharises, hypocrites: for ye build the tombs of the Prophets, & garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because ye build the tombs of the Prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
23:30 and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we should not have been their fellows in the blood of prophets. and say: If we had been in our fathers’ time, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the prophets. And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the Prophets. And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the Prophets.
23:31 And so ye be into witnessing to yourselves, that ye be the sons of them that slew the prophets. So are ye witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them, which killed the prophets. So then ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them that murdered the Prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the Prophets.
23:32 And fill ye the measure of your fathers. Fulfill ye likewise the measure of your fathers: Fulfill ye also the measure of your fathers. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
23:33 Ye serpents, fruits of adders, how shall ye flee from the doom of hell? ye serpents and generation of vipers, how shall ye scape the damnation of hell? O serpents, the generation of vipers, how should ye escape the damnation of hell! Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, How can ye escape the damnation of hell?
23:34 Therefore lo! I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye shall slay and crucify, and of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues, and shall pursue from city into city; Wherefore behold I send unto you, prophets wise men, and scribes, and of them some shall ye kill and crucify, and some shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city, Wherefore behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, & of them ye shall kill and crucify: and of them shall ye scourge in your Synagogues, and persecute from city to city, Wherefore behold, I send unto you Prophets, and wise men, and Scribes, and some of them ye shall kill and crucify, and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
23:35 that all the just blood come upon you, that was shed on the earth, from the blood of just Abel till to the blood of Zacharias, the son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. that all righteous blood may fall on you, which was shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar: That upon you may come all the righteous blood that was shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zecharias the son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the Temple and the altar. That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel, unto the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
23:36 Truly I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. Verily I say unto you, all these things shall light upon this generation. Verily I say unto you, all these things shall come upon this generation. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
23:37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that slayest prophets, and stonest them that be sent to thee, how oft would I gather together thy children, as an hen gathereth together her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldest not. Jerusalem Jerusalem which killest prophets, and stonest them which are sent to thee: how often would I have gathered thy children together, as the hen gathereth her chickens under her wings? but ye would not? Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the Prophets & stonest them which are sent to thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, as the hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! O Hierusalem, Hierusalem, thou that killest the Prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not?
23:38 Lo! your house shall be left to you desert. behold your habitation shall be left unto you desolate. Behold, your habitation shall be left unto you desolate. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
23:39 And I say to you, ye shall not see me from henceforth, till ye say, Blessed is he, that cometh in the name of the Lord. For I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth, till that ye say: blessed is he that cometh in the name of the lord. For I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth till that ye say, Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. For I say unto you, ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord.
